National Assembly Passes Bill to Increase MPs’ Salaries

The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the Members of Parliament Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025, which had already received the Senate’s approval. The bill, passed by a majority vote, increases the salaries of parliamentarians.

Despite criticism over the proposed raise, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had endorsed the salary hike last month. Following his approval, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq formally notified the increase.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman condemned the decision, calling the salary hike a “betrayal of the public” amid ongoing economic struggles.

The National Assembly’s Finance Committee, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, sanctioned the increase, raising the monthly salary of each Member of the National Assembly (MNA) and senator to Rs519,000 from the previous Rs180,000.

The bill, introduced by Romina Khurshid Alam, faced no opposition from Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, as reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan.

The amendment bill, which modifies the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) Act of 1974, had already been endorsed by the Senate before reaching the National Assembly for final approval.

In a similar move, the Punjab Assembly in December passed an amendment bill granting substantial increases in financial benefits for legislators, including the speaker, deputy speaker, ministers, parliamentary secretaries, special assistants, and advisers.
