NA Speaker to Chair Govt-PTI Talks on January 2
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq will chair an in-camera meeting between the federal government and PTI’s negotiating teams on January 2, 2025, according to a notification from the NA secretariat. This meeting will be the second round of discussions, focusing on the PTI’s demands, including the release of jailed party workers and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26.
The meeting is scheduled for 11:30 AM at the Parliament House. PTI’s deadline for concluding negotiations, set by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, is January 31. Raza had previously announced that the PTI would formally give the government this deadline on January 2, with opposition leader Omar Ayub expected to present the cut-off date during the meeting.
Tensions between the PTI and the government, especially after Imran Khan’s incarceration, have been high, with multiple protests escalating into violence. Despite the strained relations, Imran Khanβs committee has pushed for negotiations, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a committee to engage in talks, leading to some easing of tensions.
