Multan Sultans’ Owner Ali Tareen Criticizes PSL for Lack of Diversity in Anthem Selection
Multan Sultans’ owner, Ali Khan Tareen, has voiced his disappointment over the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) decision to have singer Ali Zafar perform the official anthem for the league’s 10th edition, raising concerns about the lack of diversity in artist selection.
Calls for Fresh Talent
Taking to Instagram, Tareen questioned PSL’s continued reliance on Zafar despite repeated requests from franchises to introduce new voices. “Pakistan has an abundance of talented artists, yet nearly half of PSL’s anthems have been given to the same middle-aged guy,” he wrote. “They talk about making PSL bigger and better, yet keep recycling the same voices.”
Controversial Selection
The PSL announced on Tuesday that Zafar would once again perform the league’s anthem, marking his fifth appearance. He previously lent his voice to PSL songs in 2016, 2017, 2018, and returned in 2024 following a break due to legal disputes with singer Meesha Shafi.
Tareen’s criticism highlights ongoing frustrations among PSL franchises, who have long advocated for fresh musical talent to be featured. However, the league has continued to bring Zafar back, despite these objections.
No Change in Plans
Despite the backlash, PSL has not signaled any intention to revise its decision. The release date for the anthem remains unannounced, while the tournament is set to commence on April 11.
