NEW DELHI:
Manmohan Singh, the former Indian Prime Minister, was cremated on Sunday with full state honours on the banks of the Yamuna River in New Delhi. The ceremony followed Sikh traditions, with priests chanting hymns. Singhβs body, draped in the Indian flag, was transported through the city on a flower-adorned carriage pulled by an army truck.
Before being placed on the pyre, the flag was removed and replaced with a saffron cloth. Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Since his death, many have reflected on his tenure, especially his remark near the end of his leadership, “history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media,” which referenced his leadership under a coalition government often criticized for corruption and eventually losing in the 2014 election to Narendra Modi.
