LOS ANGELES:
The 45th Razzie Awards, an annual event that humorously highlights the worst in Hollywood, saw “Madame Web” take home multiple dishonors, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay.
The satirical awards show, known for spoofing the Oscars, also recognized Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix comedy “Unfrosted,” a satire about the cereal industry. Seinfeld himself received Worst Actor, while Amy Schumer was named Worst Supporting Actress.
“Unfrosted” was tied for two wins alongside “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Megalopolis.” The upcoming “Joker” sequel was awarded Worst Prequel, Sequel, Remake, or Rip-Off, as well as Worst Screen Combo. Meanwhile, “Megalopolis” earned veteran director Francis Ford Coppola the title of Worst Director, with Jon Voight named Worst Supporting Actor.
Responding to the Razzie recognition, Coppola took to Instagram on Friday to share his perspective on the awards.
“I am honored to receive the Razzie Award in so many major categories for ‘Megalopolis’ and for the unique distinction of being named Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Picture,” he wrote. “At a time when few dare to challenge the conventions of modern filmmaking, I take pride in pushing boundaries.”
He went on to criticize the current state of the film industry, saying, “In today’s world, where art is treated like a competitive sport and assigned scores as if it were professional wrestling, I refuse to conform to the industry’s risk-averse standards. Despite an abundance of young talent, the industry shies away from producing films that will stand the test of time.”
The Razzie Redeemer Award, given to a past nominee who has since made a significant career comeback, was awarded to “The Last Showgirl,” starring Pamela Anderson.
According to the official Razzie website, the awards are decided by more than 1,100 members from across the U.S. and around 20 other countries.
