Luigi Mangione Indicted in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case
Luigi Mangione, 26, has been indicted on federal charges related to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, outside a Manhattan hotel.
The charges include two counts of stalking, firearms offenses, and murder with a firearm. If convicted, Mangione could face the death penalty. Federal prosecutors, under the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi, are seeking the death penalty, describing the murder as a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination” and an act of “political violence.” Mangione’s legal team contends that Bondi’s comments have biased the grand jury and are politically driven.
Surveillance video allegedly shows the masked shooter attacking Thompson, with bullets reportedly inscribed with messages critical of the insurance industry.
Mangione was arrested five days after the murder in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was found with the weapon used in the shooting and materials expressing animosity toward the health insurance sector.
An Ivy League graduate from an affluent Maryland family, Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges. He remains in custody at a federal detention center in Brooklyn.
The case has sparked public discussions on healthcare access and costs, with some seeing Mangione’s actions as a statement against the U.S. healthcare system.
