Robey recounted the experience, which took place after a night out in Manchester with a friend. She described how the driver began behaving oddly during the journey, stopping the car and asking for her Instagram handle. “I think he must have seen my name when I booked it,” Robey shared. “He asked for my Instagram username, pulled over, and looked it up.” The driver even offered to refund her fare after finding her account.
The situation escalated about 20 minutes after the ride when the driver allegedly called her, requesting that she “come downstairs” as he had something for her. At first, Robey thought it was related to a Deliveroo order but was shocked to realize it was the same Uber driver. “I freaked out,” she admitted. Pretending to comply, she quickly hung up and blocked his number.
Robey shared the unsettling story on TikTok, where it garnered significant attention. Viewers expressed concern over the potential breach of privacy, with some suggesting the driver’s actions could violate data protection regulations.
Uber called the incident “completely unacceptable” and launched an investigation. A company spokesperson emphasized that all drivers must adhere to strict Community Guidelines, and the driver involved has been barred from taking further rides with Robey.
The company’s safety team contacted Robey and the driver following the incident. According to Uber, the driver claimed he was returning to Robey’s apartment to give her an earring she had supposedly left in the car. However, Robey denied leaving any belongings behind and dismissed the explanation as a lie. “He was lying, and it makes you wonder what his real intentions were,” she said.
Robey expressed frustration over what she perceived as inadequate action by Uber, stating, “I don’t think he should still have that job. This could happen to anyone, and the consequences could be far worse.”
