John Sykes, the legendary guitarist known for his influential work with Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder, has passed away at the age of 65 after a brave battle with cancer.

His family shared a heartfelt statement on Sykes’s social media, expressing their grief: “John Sykes has passed away following a long and courageous fight against cancer. He will be remembered for his incredible talent, warmth, and larger-than-life presence.”

Sykes achieved global fame as a co-writer of Whitesnake’s 1987 self-titled album, which featured massive hits like “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love.” The album went on to sell more than eight million copies in the U.S. alone. He was also a key figure in Thin Lizzy, contributing significantly to the band’s Thunder and Lightning album.

Renowned for his virtuosic guitar skills and unique songwriting, Sykes built a sound that resonated with rock fans worldwide. Although he departed from Whitesnake before the album’s monumental success, his influence remained strong through projects such as Blue Murder and his solo career.

In recent years, Sykes hinted at a return to music with his solo album Sy-Ops, releasing songs like “Out Alive” and “Dawning of a Brand New Day” in 2021. Despite slowing down, he expressed a desire to return to live performances and reconnect with his fans.
