Leaked Footage of CW’s Live-Action Powerpuff Girls Reboot Sparks Fan Disappointment
Fans of The Powerpuff Girls have been left disheartened after leaked footage from The CW’s canceled live-action reboot surfaced online.
Originally scrapped in 2023, the show aimed to reimagine the beloved Cartoon Network superheroes as adults, struggling to reconcile their present lives with their childhood crime-fighting past.
The leaked footage—believed to be a trailer—was briefly uploaded by YouTube channel Lost Media Busters before Warner Bros. swiftly took it down. The clip featured Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, with Scrubs star Donald Faison portraying Professor Utonium.
Unlike the original animated series, the reboot took a self-aware approach, acknowledging the trio’s past superhero fame while steering the narrative in a drastically different direction. Blossom remains haunted by her past, Buttercup has abandoned crime-fighting, and Bubbles struggles with fame and substance abuse. However, when their old nemesis Mojo Jojo threatens Townsville, the trio is forced to reunite.
Despite the intriguing premise, the leaked footage was widely criticized for its corny dialogue, awkward humor, and subpar special effects. Many viewers compared it to a poorly executed Saturday Night Live skit.
One user commented, “The trailer for the canceled CW live-action Powerpuff Girls leaked. I watched it. It is literally one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. You need to watch it.”
Another expressed strong disdain, writing, “I have never felt more sick in my life than watching the leaked Powerpuff Girls CW trailer. I’m not even joking; I literally felt my stomach turn inside out. Everything about that trailer screams Hollywood brain rot—from the editing to the effects to the costumes.”
Amid the backlash, some fans suggested that the ill-fated project deserves a deep dive, with one user humorously stating, “There needs to be a documentary on the unreleased live-action Powerpuff Girls CW series lol.”
