New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan due to a hand injury, leaving Michael Bracewell to continue as captain.
With regular white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner occupied in the IPL, Bracewell recently led New Zealand to a 4-1 T20 series victory over Pakistan. Latham was initially set to captain the side in the three-match ODI series starting Saturday in Napier but sustained a hand fracture while batting in the nets. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed he will need at least four weeks to recover.
Meanwhile, opener Will Young will miss the final two ODIs to be with his wife as they prepare for the birth of their first child.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead acknowledged the setback but expressed confidence in Bracewell’s leadership.
“It’s disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Stead said. “Michael has done a great job in the T20 series, so the team remains in good hands.”
To fill the gaps, Henry Nicholls will return from a calf strain to replace Latham, while Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties. Additionally, Canterbury batsman Rhys Mariu has earned his maiden call-up as batting cover.
Stead emphasized the need for adaptability on this tour, given the unavailability of several players.
“These situations create opportunities for others, and it’s great to introduce Rhys into the squad for the first time while also welcoming Henry back.”
