Russia Signals Openness to Ceasefire Talks with U.S.
Russia announced on Friday that President Vladimir Putin had conveyed “additional” messages to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Washington’s proposed ceasefire in Ukraine. The Kremlin expressed “cautious optimism” about the possibility of reaching an agreement.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin on Thursday night to present the details of a joint U.S.-Ukrainian initiative, which outlines a 30-day pause in hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv after three years of conflict.
According to the Kremlin, Putin shared “additional” messages with Trump through Witkoff, and the two leaders might hold direct talks once Trump reviews the information.
“When Mr. Witkoff delivers all relevant details to President Trump, we will determine when the conversation will take place,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, emphasizing that all parties recognized the need for such discussions.
Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz stated in a Fox News interview that there was “some cautious optimism” following Witkoff’s meeting with Putin. Peskov echoed this sentiment, saying, “There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic.” However, he acknowledged that significant work remained before reaching a final agreement.
Putin Seeks Long-Term Peace, Raises Concerns
Putin reiterated his willingness to consider a truce but raised concerns about how it would be implemented. He stressed that any agreement should ensure “long-term peace,” hinting at Russia’s demand that Ukraine remain outside NATO.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Putin’s stance, calling it “very manipulative,” while Germany dismissed Russia’s response as a “delaying tactic.”
Trump Urges Putin to Protect Ukrainian Soldiers
President Trump urged Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines, expressing hope for an end to the conflict.
“I have strongly requested President Putin to ensure their safety,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, describing his conversation with the Russian leader as “very good and productive.”
Saudi Arabia Supports Peace Initiatives
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman voiced support for diplomatic efforts to end the war. According to a statement from Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry, the crown prince emphasized the kingdom’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and backing all initiatives aimed at achieving a political resolution.
G7 Nations Back Ceasefire Proposal
The Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers issued a united statement supporting the U.S.-led ceasefire proposal. Speaking from Quebec, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly highlighted strong G7 consensus on Ukraine.
“All G7 foreign ministers agree with the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire that has Ukrainian backing. Now, we are awaiting Russia’s response,” Joly said.
Despite concerns over Trump’s engagement with Russia and his approach toward Ukraine, the G7 has maintained a firm stance against Moscow’s 2022 invasion. The diplomatic landscape saw a major shift when U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, attending the Quebec discussions, met with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. During the meeting, Kyiv endorsed a proposal for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, marking a significant step in ongoing peace efforts.
