In an unexpected move, Karachi’s business community has urged the appointment of Maryam Nawaz, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as the Chief Minister of Sindh. The call came following her notable performance in Punjab, according to reports from Express News.
During a meeting with Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Sunday, a senior businessman suggested, “Let Maryam Nawaz Sharif lead for a while, and you can take Murad Ali Shah.” This suggestion was met with enthusiastic approval from the traders in attendance, all of whom supported the idea of Maryam taking charge of Sindh. Although Iqbal smiled at the comment, he chose not to offer any public response.
This appeal reflects growing frustration within Karachi’s business community with the current provincial government. Murad Ali Shah, the incumbent Chief Minister from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has faced mounting criticism regarding governance issues, particularly in Karachi.
While Maryam has mainly focused on national and party politics, her leadership in Punjab has earned her praise from traders who credit her efforts for the province’s progress. However, the call for her to lead Sindh is seen as both symbolic and politically sensitive.
