Jon M. Chu Confirms Britney Spears Will Star in Biopic Inspired by Her 2023 Memoir

Jon M. Chu, who recently won a Golden Globe for Wicked, has confirmed that Britney Spears will play a significant role in the creation of her upcoming biopic. In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Chu revealed that while the project is still in its early stages, Spears’ involvement is certain. He emphasized, “She will be very involved in this. I have ideas and approaches, but it’s still very early.”

The biopic, being produced by Universal Pictures, will be based on Spears’ 2023 memoir, which offers a deep dive into her personal and professional journey. Chu, a long-time admirer of the pop star, is dedicated to portraying her story authentically. “I want to do her justice and tell her story right,” he said, highlighting how the memoir’s emotional revelations create a strong foundation for the film.

While the casting for the role of Spears has not been finalized, Chu acknowledged the buzz around fan suggestions and assured that the casting decision will align with the overall tone and direction of the film. Producer Marc Platt, who worked with Chu on Wicked, will also help produce the biopic.

Before diving into the Spears project, Chu is finishing work on Wicked: For Good, the sequel starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. With filming already completed, the sequel is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025. Reflecting on the Wicked films’ cultural impact, Chu called them “timeless cinematic experiences” during his Golden Globe acceptance speech.

Platt confirmed that Wicked: For Good remains their priority for the year, with the Spears biopic set to become a long-term focus. Once Wicked is complete, Chu plans to shift his full attention to the biopic about Britney Spears.
