Jimmy Carter’s Funeral Brings US Presidents Together

WASHINGTON:
The funeral of former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday offered a rare moment of unity in a politically divided America, as all five living U.S. presidents gathered at Washington’s National Cathedral to honor the 39th president, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100.

In a historic display just days before Donald Trump’s expected return to the White House, Trump and former President Barack Obama shook hands, sharing a moment of civility amid the nation’s mourning. Alongside them were President Joe Biden, former presidents George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, all present to pay their respects.

Biden, 82, delivered the eulogy, praising Carter’s “character” and noting that while Carter seemed from a bygone era, he had remarkable foresight. Biden’s speech also seemed to reference Trump, criticizing hate and the abuse of power. Biden, who will soon pass the presidency to Trump, emphasized the need to stand against such threats to democracy.

While Carter’s presidency (1977-1981) was once viewed as weak and ineffective, his legacy has grown to highlight his decency and achievements, particularly in foreign policy. Tributes from family and former political foes further underscored his impact. Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, spoke of his love for nature, while another grandson, Joshua, reflected on his grandfather’s leadership with love and respect.

A posthumous tribute was also read from Gerald Ford, Carter’s Republican predecessor, delivered by Ford’s son, Steven. Additionally, former Vice President Walter Mondale, who passed away in 2021, was honored with a tribute read by his son, Ted.
