JD Vance Criticizes Europe for Backing U.S. in Iraq War

US Vice President JD Vance has urged European nations to assert more independence from the United States, specifically highlighting the Iraq War as a significant example of where Europe’s lack of resistance contributed to what he called one of the “biggest strategic disasters” of modern history.

In an interview with UnHerd, Vance argued that European governments that opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq could have done more to resist Washington’s leadership. He said, “If the Europeans had been a little more independent, and a little more willing to stand up, maybe we could have prevented the catastrophic consequences of the US-led invasion.”

Having served as a military journalist with the US Marines in Iraq, Vance acknowledged that many European leaders were right to oppose the war but lacked the resolve to act decisively.

Vance also reiterated his belief that a more self-reliant and assertive Europe would benefit both the US and Europe. He expressed, “I don’t want the Europeans to just do whatever the Americans tell them to do. It’s not in their interest, and it’s not in ours either.”

At the time of the Iraq War, countries like France, Germany, and Belgium resisted US pressure, while others, such as the UK, Spain, and Italy, joined the coalition. Vance, who expressed affection for Europe, added, “It’s not good for Europe to be the permanent security vassal of the United States.”

This sentiment aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to pressure European allies on defense spending, trade, and economic policies. In February, Vance delivered strong critiques at the Munich Security Conference, especially regarding Europe’s stance on immigration and cultural issues.

Vance has since attempted a more diplomatic approach, especially with the UK, emphasizing the potential for beneficial trade deals between the US and UK under President Donald Trump. However, he continued to stress that Europe must reduce its dependence on the United States both militarily and economically.

These remarks come amid rising tensions between the US and Europe, fueled by Trump’s trade tariffs and the uncertainty surrounding Washington’s evolving foreign policies.
