MUMBAI: A tragic incident near a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site in southern India has left one man dead and two women, including an Israeli tourist and an Indian national, victims of gang rape. The assault occurred late on Thursday, according to local police reports on Saturday.
The victims, along with two other male tourists, were stargazing in the town of Hampi when they were confronted by three men following a dispute over money, explained Police Superintendent Ram Arasiddi in a phone conversation with Reuters. The attackers reportedly pushed the men into a river canal before sexually assaulting the women. While two of the men, including an American tourist, survived the ordeal, the body of the third man was discovered on Saturday morning.
Authorities have since arrested two of the suspects involved in the attack and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
This case has reignited concerns over women’s safety in India, a issue that drew global attention last year following the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. That incident sparked widespread protests and national outrage, highlighting the urgent need for improved security measures for women across the country.
