Iran Weighs Talks with US Amid Sanctions, Rejects Major Concessions
As economic sanctions continue to strain its economy, Iran is cautiously considering the possibility of engaging in talks with the United States, though it remains firm in its refusal to make significant concessions. Since returning to the White House in January, U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a new nuclear deal with Tehran while reinstating his “maximum pressure” policy, which includes stringent sanctions.
Iran has officially rejected direct negotiations as long as sanctions remain in place. President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated this stance on Tuesday, declaring that Iran “will not bow in humiliation to anyone.” Despite this, recent developments suggest a potential opening for dialogue.
On Friday, Trump revealed that he had sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging negotiations and warning of possible military action if Iran refuses to engage. Iranian officials confirmed that the letter is expected to be delivered “soon” through an Arab intermediary.
“Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, is carrying the letter,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated on Wednesday. This move has sparked speculation about the potential for renewed diplomatic efforts.
Analysts suggest that Iran’s primary focus remains on its nuclear program. “It seems that Iran is ready for limited negotiations, specifically addressing the nuclear issue, but not extending beyond that,” said foreign policy analyst Rahman Ghahremanpour.
Trump, however, appears to be seeking a broader agreement that would encompass not only Iran’s nuclear activities but also its missile capabilities and its support for militant groups opposed to Israel, often referred to as the “axis of resistance.”
In a statement on Sunday, Iran’s mission to the United Nations indicated that Tehran might consider discussions limited to “the potential militarisation” of its nuclear program. This cautious approach reflects Iran’s desire to protect its sovereignty while exploring avenues to ease economic pressures.
The situation remains delicate, with both sides maintaining firm positions. While the possibility of talks offers a glimmer of hope, significant hurdles remain, particularly regarding the scope of negotiations and the lifting of sanctions. The international community continues to watch closely as tensions between the two nations persist.
