Indian Army Chief: No Troop Reduction Along China Border This Winter

India’s Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, announced on Monday that the country does not plan to reduce its troop presence along the northern border during the winter. He emphasized that troop numbers may change during the summer, depending on the progress of ongoing negotiations with China.

Following the deadly clashes in 2020, where 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers were killed, both countries halted patrols at several border points in Ladakh to prevent further confrontations. Despite the withdrawal of troops in some areas after a deal between India and China in October 2023, both sides have continued to maintain military presence in the sensitive region.

General Dwivedi clarified that troop reductions would not be part of India’s winter strategy, as typically fewer troops are deployed during colder months. However, decisions regarding troop levels for the summer would be contingent on the status of diplomatic discussions with China.

India and China share a disputed border in the Himalayas, which has been a source of tension for decades, including a brief war in 1962. Relations had stabilized until the 2020 border clashes disrupted trade and diplomatic exchanges between the two nations.
