Hiker Rescued After 13 Days Missing in Australia’s Kosciuszko Park

A 23-year-old Melbourne student, Hadi Nazari, was found alive after being lost for 13 days in Kosciuszko National Park. The neurosurgery student became separated from his hiking group on Boxing Day while on the Hannels Spur Trail between Khancoban and Thredbo in New South Wales’ Snowy Mountains.

Nazari had only water and two muesli bars to survive during the ordeal. His situation ended on Wednesday afternoon when he flagged down a group of hikers. He identified himself and mentioned he was “thirsty.” The hikers quickly called emergency services, leading to his rescue about 20 kilometers from the main search command.

Superintendent Andrew Spliet shared that Nazari had been consuming minimal food, relying mainly on two muesli bars. He was airlifted to safety, examined by paramedics, and found to be in good spirits with no significant injuries. He was later reunited with his family and taken to Cooma Hospital for further checks.

Authorities credited Nazari’s previous hiking experience and physical fitness for his survival in the tough conditions. The search intensified after a video recorded in Indonesian, in which Nazari apologized for going missing and mentioned drinking water, was found on his camera. This helped confirm he was still alive.

More than 300 people, including emergency services and volunteers, participated in the search. Authorities have praised the coordinated effort that led to Nazari’s safe return.
