Guardiola Commits to Man City Amid Challenges

LONDON: Pep Guardiola remains resolute in his commitment to Manchester City, despite the club’s recent struggles. The City manager, who recently extended his contract by two years, has faced mounting pressure following a dismal run of form. With nine defeats in their last 13 matches and only one win during this period, questions have arisen about Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Guardiola, who has guided City to six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons, insists he is determined to reverse the club’s fortunes.

“I will try; I will keep going. Sometimes you think a bad run will end quickly or be easier to fix, but it takes more time,” Guardiola said. “I will not give up. I want to be here and turn this situation around. I don’t want to disappoint the club, the fans, or anyone who loves this team.”

Guardiola emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, “The biggest test is to come back again, and we have done it before.”

Manchester City’s struggles have been compounded by a string of injuries. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is recovering from a long-term knee injury, while Ruben Dias, John Stones, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, and Matheus Nunes all missed the Boxing Day 1-1 draw with Everton. Adding to their woes, Erling Haaland’s penalty miss against Everton extended his erratic form this season, with the prolific striker scoring just once in his last seven games.

Despite the setbacks, Guardiola refused to single out Haaland or any other player for blame.

“I don’t believe in pointing fingers or complaining. It’s football, it’s life. We’ll try again,” he said. “Our success has always been built on persistence. Winning consistently for years requires a mentality to push forward even when results aren’t favorable.”

As City prepares to face Leicester on Sunday, the fitness of several key players remains uncertain. Guardiola remains hopeful, saying, “Sometimes injuries happen. For years we’ve been incredibly consistent, but now we’re a bit down. The main reason is the absence of so many key players. But I’ve seen the team’s spirit, their focus, and the effort they’ve put into training.”

Brighton Held to Frustrating Draw

In another Premier League clash, Brighton & Hove Albion were held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford at the American Express Stadium. Despite dominating the match with 24 shots, Brighton failed to capitalize on their chances, extending their winless streak to six games.

Brighton, now in 10th place with 26 points from 18 games, sit two points ahead of 11th-placed Brentford, who are still searching for their first away win of the season.

“It’s disappointing. The locker room atmosphere reflects that,” said Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler. “We have to learn how to win these games. Football is about results, and we need to improve in that aspect.”

Brighton’s early efforts saw Julio Enciso hit the woodwork in the fifth minute, but despite continued pressure on Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, the hosts could not find a breakthrough. Both teams will be looking to improve their form in the coming fixtures.
