Government Plans to Launch 5G Internet Services by Mid-2025, Says IT Official

The government is set to introduce 5G services in Pakistan by mid-2025, according to Parliamentary Secretary for IT, Sabreen Ghori, who made the announcement on Wednesday.

Speaking during the National Assembly session, Ghori assured lawmakers that ongoing internet speed issues would be addressed, promising noticeable improvements by the middle of the year.

She highlighted multiple factors contributing to slow internet connectivity, acknowledging the widespread challenges faced by users across the country.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about inconsistent internet speeds. PPP’s Agha Rafiullah pointed out that users often struggle with downloading videos and experience complete service disruptions. Similarly, MPA Shagufta Jumani referenced PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s remarks questioning the mysterious causes behind frequent internet cable damages in Pakistan.

Despite the 5G rollout plans, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) 2024 annual report warned of significant hurdles in the transition. According to the report, although broadband penetration is increasing, Pakistan may face difficulties shifting to 5G due to financial constraints, as reported by The News in December.

The report also highlighted declining investment in the telecom sector, dropping from a high of $1.6 billion in 2021–2022 to $765 million in 2023–2024. Additionally, while revenue per user has grown in local currency, it has decreased in dollar terms when compared to similar markets.

Moreover, the PTA acknowledged that telecom operators will bear a substantial financial burden in deploying 5G. The need for heavy initial investments, coupled with a slow return on investment, may lead companies to adopt a cautious approach towards the transition.
