Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Passes Away at 85
KUALA LUMPUR – Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, known for his promise of reform and soft-spoken leadership style, has passed away at the age of 85, his family confirmed on Monday.
Abdullah died in hospital following a prolonged illness. A state funeral is planned for Tuesday to honor the late leader.
Affectionately called “Pak Lah” (Uncle Lah), Abdullah took office in 2003, succeeding Mahathir Mohamad after his 22-year tenure. As Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, Abdullah’s leadership style marked a shift from his predecessor’s authoritative approach. A moderate and thoughtful figure, he led with a calm demeanor and a vision of moderation and inclusivity.
His initial rise was met with optimism. Riding a wave of public approval, Abdullah led the ruling National Front coalition to a landslide victory in the 2004 general elections. However, his popularity declined in subsequent years due to perceived indecisiveness and internal political pressures. In 2009, facing criticism and electoral setbacks, he stepped down, handing over leadership to Najib Razak.
Following his resignation, Abdullah remained out of the political spotlight, maintaining a quiet life away from national affairs.
Current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to Abdullah, calling him a man of integrity and kindness. “He was a leader who never raised his voice, never sought power greedily, and never responded to criticism with anger,” Anwar said in a heartfelt Facebook post. He also recalled Abdullah’s compassion during a difficult time in his own life, highlighting the late leader’s grace under pressure.
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also expressed condolences, recognizing Abdullah’s role in Malaysia’s progress. “During his tenure, Tun Abdullah made meaningful contributions to Malaysia’s social and economic development,” Wong stated.
Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared his own tribute, reflecting on their long-standing acquaintance and Abdullah’s tireless dedication to improving the lives of Malaysians.
