Azhar Mahmood Confirms Interest in Pakistan Head Coach Role as PCB Nears Decision
Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has confirmed his intention to apply for the role of head coach of the national men’s cricket team, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) works to finalize its coaching staff ahead of a busy international schedule.
Currently serving as an assistant coach, the 50-year-old Azhar announced his candidacy in a recent interview, saying, “I will definitely apply for the position of head coach for the Pakistan team.”
A well-established figure within Pakistan’s cricket coaching structure, Azhar previously served as the team’s bowling coach and brings with him a wealth of international experience, both as a player and a coach.
His expression of interest comes at a critical time, as the PCB prepares to close its application process by May 4. The board is expected to make an official appointment shortly after.
With the ICC T20 World Cup fast approaching and several key international fixtures lined up, Pakistan is under pressure to solidify its coaching team.
Azhar briefly stepped into the head coach role earlier this year during the team’s tour of New Zealand, where he guided Pakistan to a 2-2 draw in the T20I series.
Meanwhile, another top candidate reportedly under serious consideration is Mike Hesson, the former head coach of New Zealand and current coach of Islamabad United in the HBL Pakistan Super League. Hesson, known for his strategic expertise, led New Zealand from 2012 to 2018 and has also held key coaching roles in the Indian Premier League.
If selected, Hesson would begin his tenure with Pakistan during the upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled to run from May 25 to June 3 in Faisalabad and Lahore.
Pakistan vs Bangladesh T20I Series Schedule:
- 21 May – Bangladesh team arrives
- 25 May – 1st T20I, Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad (8:00 PM)
- 27 May – 2nd T20I, Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad (8:00 PM)
- 30 May – 3rd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore (8:00 PM)
- 1 June – 4th T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore (8:00 PM)
- 3 June – 5th T20I, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore (8:00 PM)
As the PCB moves closer to finalizing its choice, the selection of the next head coach is seen as a crucial step in shaping the national team’s direction ahead of a pivotal 2024–25 season.
