Explosion at Indian Munitions Factory Claims the Lives of At Least Eight Workers

 

MUMBAI: A deadly explosion at a munitions factory in western India has resulted in the deaths of at least eight workers, with several others still trapped inside the building, according to government officials on Friday.

The blast occurred Friday morning in Bhandara, located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of Mumbai, India’s financial center, and led to the collapse of the factory’s roof.

Indian cabinet minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the incident, stating, “At least eight people have been killed, and seven others have been injured in the explosion at the Bhandara munitions factory.”

Gadkari, who represents Maharashtra state, expressed his condolences following the tragedy.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared on X that up to 14 workers were still trapped in the aftermath of the explosion, and emergency rescue operations were underway.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his sadness over the incident, stating on X, “My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. I am praying for the quick recovery of the injured.”

Industrial accidents are unfortunately common in India, often attributed to inadequate planning and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

In 2023, a similar tragedy occurred at a factory in Maharashtra, where nine workers lost their lives in a blast at a facility manufacturing drones and explosives.
