Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, has been diagnosed with dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, his lawyers revealed in court documents. This comes as Jeffries, 80, faces charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. His diagnosis raises concerns about his ability to participate in his defense.
Jeffries was arrested in October in Florida and has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and prostitution charges. Prosecutors say that between 2008 and 2015, Jeffries, his partner Matthew Smith, and recruiter James Jacobson ran an international sex trafficking operation, exploiting vulnerable men by promising career opportunities in exchange for participating in explicit events.
Jeffries’ lawyer requested a neuropsychological evaluation, which showed significant cognitive issues. A hearing in June will decide if Jeffries can continue with the trial. Some victims, including former Abercrombie employees, were allegedly coerced into these events, with reports of forced substance use. The youngest victim was 19.
This case has brought attention to the importance of accountability in high-profile cases, as the legal proceedings continue to focus on seeking justice for the victims.
