Editorial: 2025 Offers Hope for a Constructive Path Toward Stability

Although Pakistan struggled to achieve the necessary stability in 2024, primarily due to a contentious election and political discord, 2025 brings a renewed hope for a more constructive approach to address the nation’s challenges.

The previous year witnessed numerous setbacks, including political unrest, institutional decline, increasing terrorism, stagnant economic growth, internet restrictions, climate challenges, and the resurgence of polio. However, these issues are deeply interconnected, and the resolution lies in securing political stability, good governance, and an uninterrupted democratic process. Without these, Pakistan will continue to face recurring crises.

The 2024 general elections, intended to resolve the political deadlock between PML-N, PTI, and the establishment, only exacerbated the situation due to perceived unfairness. Despite this, there is still hope for a democratic solution, as discussions between the PTI and the government parties have started. However, these negotiations must prioritize the public’s welfare and uphold the constitution to avoid further weakening democratic institutions.

Economic challenges remain equally critical. Political stability and continuity are essential for fostering long-term economic growth and breaking free from Pakistan’s crippling debt. Despite inflation easing, ordinary citizens continue to struggle. The country needs an economic model that focuses on growth, job creation, taxing the untaxed, and fostering financial independence rather than relying on external aid.

Terrorism, a significant threat in 2024, requires a united effort from all political and security stakeholders. In addition, the worsening climate crisis, marked by severe air pollution, heatwaves, and floods, demands effective policy responses from the government. Polio cases must also be addressed urgently.

All of these challenges can only be overcome if the political leadership puts aside infighting and works to resolve the nation’s pressing issues. For civilian rule to succeed, institutions must adhere to their constitutional roles and avoid undermining democracy.
