Doechii Shares Her Journey from Struggle to Self-Empowerment

Doechii Reflects on Overcoming Darkness and Embracing Self-Empowerment

Grammy-winning rapper Doechii recently opened up about a life-changing moment when she overcame suicidal thoughts and discovered her true sense of self.

In an interview with The Cut, Doechii recalled facing intense bullying during sixth grade, which pushed her to a breaking point.

“I was being bullied so severely that I started thinking about ending my life,” she shared. However, a sudden realization shifted her mindset. “I thought, ‘If I go through with this, I’ll be the only one gone. The bullies will still be here, and their words won’t follow me. Only I will disappear.’”

Determined to take control of her narrative, she made a powerful decision. “Then I said to myself, ‘No, I won’t let this define me!’ And suddenly, a wave of peace washed over me. That’s when I fully embraced ‘I am Doechii,’” she explained. She described this moment as a profound, almost spiritual awakening that affirmed her value and purpose.

The Denial Is a River artist emphasized that choosing to embrace her identity gave her a renewed sense of strength. “I made a conscious decision. I am the main character in this story—this is my life, and I get to shape it.”

Doechii’s openness about her struggles reflects her commitment to authenticity in her music. Inspired by Lauryn Hill, she hopes to create the same emotional impact for young Black girls that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had on her. “I want another young Black girl to feel what I felt listening to Lauryn Hill—seen, understood, and empowered,” she said.

As she continues to carve her path in the music industry, Doechii’s journey stands as a powerful testament to resilience, self-love, and empowerment.
