Novak Djokovic emerged victorious in a thrilling four-set encounter against 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, securing his place in the semi-finals of the Australian Open and moving closer to an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title. The 37-year-old Serbian triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in a match lasting 3 hours and 37 minutes, demonstrating his resilience despite battling through a left thigh injury.
Describing the match as one of the most intense of his career, Djokovic, though injured, managed to outlast the Spaniard, who is 16 years his junior. “I just wish that this match today was the final,” Djokovic said post-match. This victory marked his 50th Grand Slam semi-final appearance, a record he extended, surpassing Roger Federer by four appearances.
In the semi-finals, Djokovic will face Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who also reached this stage for the second year running after overcoming American Tommy Paul 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/0), 2-6, 6-1.
In the match against Alcaraz, Djokovic initially surged ahead by breaking the Spaniard’s serve early, but Alcaraz quickly found his rhythm and responded with a break back. After losing the first set 4-6, Djokovic called for a medical timeout due to his injury. Despite the setback, he returned to the court with his thigh heavily strapped and broke Alcaraz’s serve at the start of the second set. Djokovic then claimed the second set 6-4, followed by a dominant 6-3 win in the third set, where his experience shone through. He sealed the victory with a 6-4 win in the fourth set, finishing off Alcaraz in a series of breathtaking rallies.
After the match, Djokovic admitted uncertainty over the injury but noted the medication had helped him cope. His victory sets up a highly anticipated semi-final against Zverev, who also battled through a challenging match to advance.
Zverev, aiming for his first Grand Slam title, acknowledged the challenge ahead. “Novak is the greatest of all time right now. Carlos is going to be one of them when he hangs it up,” Zverev remarked, highlighting the generational clash.
The semi-final between Djokovic and Zverev is set to be a thrilling contest, with Djokovic holding an 8-4 career record over the German. As Djokovic prepares for the showdown, his focus remains on recovery as he aims to take another step towards capturing the Australian Open title.
