COAS Conditions Terrorist Clemency on Surrender

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, made a firm statement regarding the country’s resolve against terrorism, specifically addressing the threat posed by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to as Fitna-al-Khawarij. He emphasized that Pakistan would not allow such extremist ideologies to dominate but suggested that clemency could be offered to those who choose to surrender and seek the mercy of the state.

Speaking to university students at the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Wednesday, the army chief condemned the Fitna-al-Khawarij as a group that distorts Islam’s true teachings and brings disruption. Excerpts from his address surfaced on social media on Sunday, where he strongly stated, “We are fighting against the anarchists of Fitna-al-Khawarij who misinterpret Islam and go against its principles.”

General Munir also praised the unity within the military, highlighting that it is a force of comrades, not defined by ethnic lines, but by a shared identity as Pakistanis.

The army chief referenced the Quran to underline his position, citing verses that prescribe severe punishments for those who wage war against Allah and spread chaos. “The Quran is clear: those who create disorder and wage war against Allah and His Messenger will face punishment, which includes execution, crucifixion, amputation, or exile,” he stated.

However, General Munir offered a path to mercy for those who repent and submit. “Those who surrender to the state can expect mercy, as Allah is Most Merciful, and the state too may show leniency,” he said.

Addressing the topic of women’s rights, General Munir strongly defended the elevated status of women in Islam, calling out those who infringe upon their dignity. “Islam elevates women to the highest regard in every role – as mothers, wives, and sisters. Who are you to strip them of their dignity?” he stated, implicitly referencing the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan.

General Munir reiterated that the Pakistan Army’s fight is against those who misinterpret Islam, with the Khawarij being clear examples of such groups that violate the religion’s teachings.

Encouraging the university students, General Munir urged them to excel academically and develop skills that would contribute to Pakistan’s advancement. He also discussed the influence of external threats, particularly trans-border terrorism, on Pakistan’s security.

The COAS commended the energy, creativity, and potential of Pakistan’s youth, acknowledging them as the nation’s future leaders. He emphasized the importance of embracing “Pakistaniat,” the country’s unique history, culture, and values, in shaping the intellectual development of the youth.

General Munir also reiterated the army’s critical role in safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, honoring the sacrifices made by the Pakistani people in the ongoing fight against terrorism. He praised the unwavering support of the citizens towards the armed forces and law enforcement agencies.
