BEIJING:
China called for an end to “illegal” sanctions against Iran as it hosted senior diplomats from Iran and Russia on Friday, aiming to revive stalled negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in Beijing. The discussions focused on restarting dialogue and negotiations, which have been at a standstill for some time.
During the meeting, Wang Yi emphasized that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, was a significant achievement reached through diplomatic efforts.
“At this critical juncture, we must prioritize peace, resolve disputes through political and diplomatic means, and oppose the use of force and illegal sanctions,” Wang stated.
A statement from China’s foreign ministry urged the United States to demonstrate “political sincerity” and return to negotiations promptly. It also called on all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
“The comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue is a crucial milestone in multilateral diplomacy. All parties should work together to preserve this achievement,” the statement added.
Gharibabadi described the talks in Beijing as “constructive” and reiterated that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
“Our nuclear activities have never been diverted for non-peaceful purposes,” he said. “Unfortunately, some countries are attempting to create an unnecessary crisis in this regard.”
The meeting in Beijing reflects China’s ongoing efforts to mediate in the Iran nuclear issue and its opposition to unilateral sanctions. China has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions to international disputes and has called for the preservation of the JCPOA, which has faced significant challenges since the U.S. withdrawal in 2018.
The talks come amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and stalled negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal. China’s role as a mediator highlights its growing influence in global diplomacy and its commitment to multilateralism.
