China Aims to Strengthen Ties with Germany

BEIJING: China regards Germany and the European Union as strategic partners and aims to strengthen collaboration with them based on principles of free trade and multilateralism, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday.

During their meeting, Wang emphasized China’s commitment to deepening comprehensive cooperation with Germany to support global peace and stability. His visit to Germany, the EU’s largest economy, was part of his participation in the annual Munich Security Conference, where he also met with the EU’s foreign policy chief and top diplomats from Spain and France.

According to a statement from China’s foreign ministry, Wang expressed appreciation for Germany’s “rational and pragmatic” stance on trade policies, particularly regarding tariffs. He voiced hope that Germany would continue playing a constructive role in resolving trade disputes between China and the EU.

The statement further emphasized the need for China and the EU to work together to improve relations and enhance mutual understanding.

Additionally, Wang met with his German counterpart on the sidelines of the conference, highlighting Germany’s role as a stabilizing force in EU-China relations. In separate discussions with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Wang reiterated that China sees no fundamental conflicts with the EU and is committed to fostering cooperation for global stability.
