Canada’s Response to Foreign Interference Criticized for Delays and Lack of Coordination
OTTAWA: A public commission has criticized the Canadian government for its delayed and poorly coordinated response to foreign interference, particularly from China.
Commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue, speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, stated that Ottawa “took too long to act, and coordination was not always effective” in addressing these threats.
However, Hogue also emphasized that Canada’s “democratic institutions have remained resilient despite attempts at foreign interference.”
China, which has been identified as the primary actor in these efforts, has denied the accusations. Other nations, including India, Russia, Pakistan, and Iran, were also mentioned in the report as sources of interference.
Hogue’s final report, which spans seven volumes, was released just months before Canadians are expected to head to the polls.
