Calm Winds Bring Relief in Los Angeles Fires

LOS ANGELES:In a positive turn, winds around Los Angeles were forecasted to lessen on Friday, aiding firefighting efforts against the five major wildfires wreaking havoc near the city. At least ten people have lost their lives as these infernos swept through neighborhoods, destroying thousands of homes, and the financial toll could reach $150 billion, according to estimates.

As the full extent of the devastation became clearer, survivors faced heartbreaking losses. “I lost everything. My house burned down and I lost everything,” said Hester Callul, who sought refuge in a shelter after fleeing her home in Altadena.

California Governor Gavin Newsom took swift action on Thursday, deploying the National Guard to assist with law enforcement efforts. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger warned looters that they would face severe consequences. “I promise you, you will be held accountable,” she said. “Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.”

In response to the rising concerns, County Sheriff Robert Luna announced plans to impose a nighttime curfew in the areas most affected by the fires.
