Bilawal Criticizes VPN and Internet Restrictions Amid Government Tensions

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari criticized the slow internet speeds and restrictions in Pakistan, calling them an effort to control and censor citizens. Recently, many users have faced problems like slow speeds, trouble downloading media on WhatsApp, and internet disconnections. Digital experts say the government has been testing a system to monitor and block content on some platforms. The government claims it’s updating the system for better cyber security.

The relationship between PPP and the federal government has become tense. In December, PPP leaders expressed a lack of trust in the government. PPP members also protested in parliament over the internet restrictions and the absence of federal ministers.

Speaking at the Sindh University convocation, Bilawal emphasized the need to address internet restrictions. He compared the current digital infrastructure to roads and highways in the past and said that today, internet services are just as important. He added that past efforts to control people through the internet are signs of fear from the government.

Bilawal also criticized the ban on student unions and called it another example of the government’s fear. He encouraged the youth to fight for their rights and create awareness. He suggested that a “digital bill of rights” should be written by students and youth, not by older politicians who don’t understand the internet.

Bilawal argued that access to high-speed internet should be a basic human right and that strong rules should be made to fight misinformation and ensure online safety. He urged the youth to share their ideas for the digital bill of rights with him.
