Bangladesh’s selectors are awaiting Tamim Iqbal’s decision regarding his potential return to international cricket ahead of next month’s Champions Trophy. The deadline for squad announcements is January 12, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is giving Tamim time to make his choice. Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain met with Tamim at the Fortune Barishal team hotel in Sylhet, where Tamim is currently captaining the team in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Tamim had retired from international cricket in July 2023, only to reverse his decision the following day after intervention from the then Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. He had a falling out with the BCB president at the time, Nazmul Hassan, and gave up the captaincy. Despite this, Tamim made a brief return to play two ODIs against New Zealand in September, only to be dropped from the 2023 World Cup squad.
Tamim has continued to play domestic cricket, including his victory in the 2024 BPL with Fortune Barishal, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He is now focusing on defending that title while considering his return to international cricket.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain shared that the selectors had an initial discussion with Tamim, respecting the need for him to take time and consult with his family and well-wishers. The board has given him the space to make an informed decision.
While ODI captain Najmul Hossain Shanto supports Tamim’s return, the final decision rests with Tamim himself. Gazi Ashraf mentioned that despite Tamim’s strong performances in domestic competitions, the selectors will respect his choice and are ready to welcome him back into the team if he decides to return.
Selectors are mindful that there is a significant gap between domestic and international cricket, and Tamim’s decision is crucial at this stage of his career. The team is waiting patiently for Tamim’s response, allowing him time to make the right call.
