Ashwin announces his retirement from international cricket

Following the drawn Brisbane Test against Australia, Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian spinner, announced his retirement from international cricket. He made this revelation during a joint press conference with Indian captain Rohit Sharma at the conclusion of the match.

Ashwin shared, “I won’t take much of your time; today is my final day as an international cricketer. I have cherished countless memories with Rohit Sharma and my other teammates throughout my career, although I have lost some of them to retirement.”

He expressed his gratitude towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), his coaches, and his teammates, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara, for their unwavering support. After his retirement announcement, Ashwin exited the press conference without addressing any questions from the media. Rohit Sharma later stated that Ashwin’s decision must be respected.

Prior to the announcement, a viral video surfaced showing Virat Kohli embracing Ashwin in the dressing room during the India-Australia match, fueling speculations of his retirement.

Ashwin had played in the second Test of the series in Adelaide, where he managed just one wicket across both innings.

Though retiring from international cricket, Ashwin will continue his career in T20 cricket and is set to play for Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL season.
