Aqib Javed Defends Fahim Ashraf’s Inclusion in National Squad
Pakistan’s head coach, Aqib Javed, has come to the defense of all-rounder Fahim Ashraf’s selection for the national squad, acknowledging that while critics are entitled to their views, the decision was made with careful consideration.
Javed explained that Ashraf’s inclusion was based on his ability to contribute both as a batsman and a bowler, emphasizing that he could be used for his bowling if the team requires it.
Speaking about modern cricket, Javed highlighted the evolving nature of the game and the need for Pakistan to aim for high scores, especially in home conditions. He noted that the influence of T20 cricket, where teams frequently score over 200 runs, has shifted expectations, with teams now aiming for totals above 300.
Looking forward, Javed pointed to the upcoming Tri-Nation Series as a vital part of Pakistan’s preparation for the Champions Trophy, which will begin with a match against New Zealand.
On the composition of the national team, Javed reassured that it was a well-balanced squad, with the necessary mix of fast bowlers and spin all-rounders to tackle any situation during the crucial series.
Despite the coach’s defense, Fahim Ashraf’s selection for the ICC Champions Trophy has sparked significant criticism. Many fans and former cricketers have questioned his place in the squad, citing his underwhelming performances.
Notably, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram voiced concerns over Ashraf’s inclusion, describing it as “out of the blue.” Akram pointed to Ashraf’s poor record, with a bowling average of 100 and a batting average of just 9 in his first 20 matches, and questioned the reasoning behind his selection.
Similarly, former captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif also expressed doubt over Ashraf’s inclusion, criticizing the selection committee for what he deemed a lack of proper preparation and a failure to address gaps in the team’s structure.
