Afghan Embassy in Turkey Shuts Down Following Host Country’s Decision
ANKARA:
The Afghan Embassy in Turkey officially announced its closure on Thursday, citing a decision by Turkish authorities.
The embassy had continued its operations for over three years with the same diplomatic team that represented Afghanistan before the Taliban regained power in August 2021. However, in a statement posted on X, the embassy confirmed that its shutdown was a result of a directive from the Turkish government.
“Following the events of August 15, 2021, the Taliban made unsuccessful attempts to seize control of the embassy while exerting continuous pressure on its diplomats and staff,” the statement read. “Additionally, the Turkish government faced mounting pressure regarding this issue, leading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to terminate the ambassador’s mission and that of the embassy’s diplomats.”
