Access to Imran Khan Emerges as Key Issue in Negotiations

Access to Imran Khan Becomes a Sticking Point in Government-PTI Talks

ISLAMABAD:
Negotiations between the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have hit an impasse after PTI’s request for access to its leader, Imran Khan, was denied.

In a press briefing, PTI leaders expressed frustration over being unable to meet their incarcerated leader, a step they deem essential for meaningful dialogue. Despite prior assurances from the government, the meeting has not materialized.

The two sides have held two rounds of discussions, mediated by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. However, the lack of access to Imran Khan has stalled further progress, with no date set for a third round.

PTI officials, including Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and Opposition Leader Omar Ayub, emphasized that Imran’s input is crucial for finalizing the party’s charter of demands. PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram highlighted that without consulting Imran, the party cannot present any written proposals.

“This delay is caused by the inability to meet our leader,” Akram stated, adding that PTI had approached the Speaker’s Office, which conveyed the request to the government but received no response.

Akram also stressed that if the government does not facilitate the meeting, progress in negotiations will remain stalled. “Without access to Imran, discussions will be futile,” he remarked.

PTI leaders criticized the government for double standards, referencing a previous instance where jail access was granted to delay a PTI rally. “If the jail gates can open for political convenience, why not for crucial negotiations?” Akram questioned.

Formal talks between the two sides began on December 23 to reduce political tensions and foster dialogue. In the first meeting, PTI was asked to submit its demands in writing, but in the second round on January 2, the party requested additional time, citing the need to consult Imran Khan.

Barrister Gohar reiterated the party’s dissatisfaction with the delay, emphasizing that meaningful dialogue depends on meeting their leader. Omar Ayub also criticized the government’s lack of response, calling it a reflection of their unwillingness to engage sincerely.

PTI leaders clarified that the ongoing negotiations aim to address national issues and are not a bid for political deals. They stressed that free and fair elections are the only solution to the country’s challenges.

Ayub also raised concerns about the conditions under which meetings with Imran in Adiala Jail are conducted, describing them as restrictive and unsuitable for open discussions. He called for an unmonitored and unrestricted meeting to ensure transparent communication.

The PTI leadership underscored that their demands include forming a judicial commission to investigate key incidents, such as those on May 9 and November 26, and ensuring the release of Imran Khan and other detained party members.

The party reiterated that the success of the negotiation process hinges on the government’s willingness to facilitate direct access to their leader, reaffirming their stance on free elections as the ultimate resolution to the nation’s crises.
