China has unveiled two new tailless stealth combat aircraft designs, marking a significant advancement in its next-generation fighter program. The aircraft, currently undergoing flight tests, were revealed within 24 hours and have generated considerable attention.
The designs are believed to be from two Chinese manufacturers: Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) and Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC). The first, a larger diamond-shaped jet, was revealed on December 26, 2024, coinciding with the anniversary of the Chengdu J-20’s debut. The second, a smaller jet from Shenyang, emerged shortly afterward. Both aircraft feature tailless designs to improve stealth by reducing radar visibility.
The Chengdu jet appears to have a three-engine powerplant, while the Shenyang jet uses two engines. The Chengdu aircraft may be part of the JH-XX program, designed as a tactical fighter-bomber for regional operations. The Shenyang jet is likely a fighter, possibly for air superiority, and could be crewed or operated as a drone.
These tailless designs offer reduced radar signatures, better aerodynamics, and more space for fuel and weapons, enhancing combat performance and range. Both jets are reportedly undergoing flight testing, though details about their roles and capabilities remain unconfirmed.
The release of these aircraft is seen as part of China’s strategy to modernize its air force and maintain an edge in regional air combat, especially as the U.S. develops its own sixth-generation stealth fighter. These new designs represent China’s commitment to advancing its military aviation and are expected to impact regional security dynamics.
