Trump Urges Qatar to Assist in Iran Nuclear Deal Amid Ongoing Talks
US President Donald Trump expressed hope on Wednesday that Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will help facilitate a nuclear agreement with Iran during a state dinner in Doha. Trump described the situation as “perilous” and emphasized the importance of achieving a peaceful resolution.
Speaking directly to Emir al-Thani, Trump praised Qatar’s efforts, saying, “I hope you can assist with the Iran issue because it’s a critical moment, and we want to do what’s right.” He acknowledged Qatar’s influential role and highlighted the respect Iran’s leaders have for the Qatari leadership.
Trump said, “The Iranian leaders need to understand the favor you are doing for them. Your prime minister, an outstanding leader sitting here, has been instrumental in this process. Iran must make a decision soon — it is ultimately their choice.”
He added, “I hope Iran sees the friendship here. Some might expect me to take a harsher stance, but I believe avoiding that path is the better option, and I want to pursue that.”
The negotiations, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program, began last month with mediation by Oman amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The latest round wrapped up Sunday in Muscat.
Trump warned that time is running out and suggested a successful deal could “save maybe millions of lives.”
These talks aim to replace the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which the US withdrew in May 2018 under Trump’s administration. That decision triggered a significant escalation in tensions, as Iran moved away from compliance after claiming the deal’s other parties failed to uphold economic commitments.
During his first term, Trump pursued a “maximum pressure” campaign to compel Iran back to negotiations, but those efforts did not succeed.
