Explosion at Iran’s Bandar Abbas Port Injures Dozens
A powerful explosion shook Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran, on Saturday, leaving at least 47 people injured, according to state media reports.
The incident took place as Iran entered a third round of nuclear negotiations with the United States in Oman. The exact cause of the blast remains unknown.
A local crisis management official told state television that “the explosion involved several containers stored at the Shahid Rajaee Port wharf,” adding that emergency crews were evacuating and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
Initial reports from Fars news agency confirmed 47 injuries. Meanwhile, the semi-official Tasnim news agency noted that operations at the port had been halted to contain the fire. It also warned that, given the port’s heavy workforce, there could be more casualties.
The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows several kilometers away, according to Iranian media. Online videos captured a mushroom cloud rising into the sky after the blast.
Notably, this is not the first major incident at Shahid Rajaee Port. In 2020, the port’s computer systems were targeted by a cyberattack, causing significant disruptions to traffic and shipping operations.
