Pakistan’s Salt Exports to China Rise by 40% in Q1 2025

Pakistan’s salt exports to China saw a significant 40% growth in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to data from China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC).

From January to March 2025, Pakistan exported over 13.64 million kilograms of salt, valued at $1.83 million, up from $1.30 million during the same months in 2024. This increase reflects the strengthening trade ties between the two countries, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, and China’s growing demand for high-quality industrial and edible salt.

Ghulam Qadir, the Trade and Investment Counsellor at Pakistan’s Embassy in Beijing, explained that the exports included edible salt, pure sodium chloride, and other salt products. Industry experts attribute the growth to improved logistics, competitive pricing, and better quality control from Pakistani exporters.

China’s rising salt consumption, driven by its chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing sectors, has contributed to the increased demand. A senior official from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) described the surge as a “positive sign” of Pakistan’s expanding ability to meet global demand and diversify its export offerings.

The growth in salt exports strengthens Pakistan’s position as a dependable supplier in the Chinese market and aligns with the broader goals of boosting bilateral trade through CPEC initiatives.
