Matthew McConaughey opened up about his decision to leave Hollywood during an appearance on the Good Trouble with Nick Kyrgios podcast on November 20.
The 55-year-old actor, known for his roles in romantic comedies, moved to Texas with his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, in 2014. McConaughey explained that they made an agreement to stay in Texas until he was offered roles that allowed him to move beyond being typecast as a rom-com star.
He said, “I’m not going back to work unless I get offered roles I want to do.” While he later took on other roles, like his award-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, he and his wife chose to raise their three children—Levi, Vida, and Livingston—in Texas.
Nick Kyrgios praised McConaughey for staying true to his roots. When asked about what Texas means to him, McConaughey explained, “Home, for me, is where a mile feels like a mile. An hour feels like 60 minutes.” He added that in Texas, he feels more in sync with life and relationships, at his own pace.
