CBI Submits Closure Report in Sushant Singh Rajput Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially filed a closure report in the case of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, as reported by the Times of India. The report was presented before a Mumbai court on Saturday, which will now determine whether to accept it.
Initial investigations by the Mumbai Police concluded that Sushant, who was found hanging in his Bandra apartment in June 2020, had died by suicide, with no evidence of foul play. The CBI’s findings also dismissed allegations against his girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and her family.
Rhea had previously faced accusations of abetment to suicide following Sushant’s death. His family had also filed an FIR against her and others, citing charges of theft, cheating, and wrongful confinement. This led to a jurisdictional conflict between the Bihar and Mumbai police.
The Bihar Police had recommended a CBI inquiry, which was officially initiated in August 2020 under the directive of the Supreme Court of India. Now, after years of investigation, Rhea has been cleared of all charges.
Following this development, several celebrities voiced their support for Rhea. Actress Dia Mirza called for accountability from the media, stating, “Who in the media will have the decency to apologize to Rhea Chakraborty and her family? They were subjected to immense harassment, all for TRPs. The least they can do is apologize.”
Actress Soni Razdan also criticized the handling of the case, saying, “This decision should have been made before putting her through jail and destroying her reputation. It was nothing short of a modern-day witch hunt. The real question is, where is the accountability? Who will take responsibility for this?”
Veteran actress Shabana Azmi also expressed sympathy, acknowledging the immense distress Rhea had endured. She urged people to allow Rhea the time and space to heal from the traumatic experience.
In the wake of Sushant’s tragic passing, actress Vidya Balan had also spoken out against the vilification of Rhea. Taking to social media, she wrote, “It is heartbreaking that the tragic and untimely loss of a beloved young star like Sushant Singh Rajput turned into a media spectacle. As a woman, it pains me to see Rhea Chakraborty being vilified. Shouldn’t it be ‘innocent until proven guilty’ rather than ‘guilty until proven innocent’?”
The case, which sparked nationwide controversy and intense media scrutiny, now reaches its legal conclusion as the court reviews the CBI’s final report.
