Bill Murray Cheers on Son Luke at March Madness

Bill Murray, the beloved actor known for his comedic roles, once again found himself in the March Madness spotlight over the weekend. This time, however, he wasn’t there for laughs—he was there as a proud father supporting his son, Luke Murray, an assistant coach for the University of Connecticut (UConn) men’s basketball team.

The *Ghostbusters* star was spotted courtside on Sunday, March 23, during the NCAA men’s basketball game between UConn and top-seeded Florida. While fans might have been surprised to see the Hollywood icon at the tournament, the reason was simple: family.

Bill has been a regular at UConn games since Luke joined the coaching staff, but his presence at this high-stakes March Madness game drew extra attention. Unfortunately, despite his enthusiastic support, UConn lost to Florida, ending their tournament run and allowing Florida to advance to the Sweet 16.

This isn’t the first time Bill has shown up to cheer for his son during March Madness. In 2017, he was seen passionately rooting for Xavier University, where Luke was then an assistant coach, during their upset victory over the University of Arizona. After the game, Bill couldn’t contain his excitement, comparing the win to a classic platoon movie.

“Oh, it was great. It was really like a great platoon movie, you know, like *The Dirty Dozen* or something, where a different guy comes in and saves everybody’s bacon. One after another, they all took turns. And gosh, it was fun to see a win,” Bill shared in an interview with *Xavier Gameday*.

While Bill has built his career on comedy, Luke is all business when it comes to basketball. In an April 2024 interview with *CT Insider*, Luke kept his focus strictly on the game, showcasing the disciplined approach that has earned him respect in the world of college basketball coaching.

Luke has been with UConn for four seasons, following a stint at Louisville. UConn head coach Dan Hurley has praised Luke’s contributions to the team, emphasizing his expertise and dedication to the program’s success.

Though UConn’s March Madness journey ended earlier than hoped this year, one thing is clear: Bill Murray will always be there to support his son—whether it’s from the sidelines or with a few well-timed jokes after the game.
