Xfer Records has officially launched Serum 2, a substantial upgrade to its widely acclaimed wavetable synthesizer plugin. This latest version introduces a range of new oscillator types, transforming Serum 2 into a versatile multi-engine synthesizer. Created by Steve Duda, Serum has consistently been a top choice for music producers, often surpassing competitors like NIβs Massive. With its enhanced features, Serum 2 pushes the boundaries of sound design, and existing users can enjoy the update at no additional cost.
The standout feature of Serum 2 is its expanded oscillator engines. While the original version focused on wavetable synthesis, the update introduces multi-samples, granular synthesis, sample-based oscillators, and spectral synthesis. These additions provide users with a broader palette of sound design tools, enabling the creation of more intricate and dynamic audio textures.
The sample and multi-sample engines come equipped with classic sampler functionalities, including loop detection, flexible loop modulation, tape-stop effects, real-time sample slicing, and FM/PD/distortion capabilities. The spectral oscillator introduces real-time harmonic resynthesis and transient detection, offering even greater precision in sound shaping.
The wavetable engine has also been upgraded with smooth interpolation, allowing for seamless transitions between waveforms. New warp modes have been added to enhance modulation options, improving FM, phase distortion, and filtering capabilities.
Beyond the oscillator updates, Serum 2 includes a host of other improvements. These include flexible effects routing, a redesigned arpeggiator and clip sequencer, and an expanded LFO engine with a wider array of shapes. The update also introduces four additional macro controls, simplifying sound manipulation. Furthermore, Serum 2 comes packed with 626 new presets and 288 wavetables, providing users with an extensive sound library to explore.
Serum 2 is now available at an introductory price of $189, with the regular price set at $249. Owners of Serum 1 can upgrade to the new version for free. The plugin supports 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of digital audio workstations. This update solidifies Serumβs position as a leading tool for modern music production.
