The 16th edition of the World Winter Special Games 2025 is set to kick off today at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy. Teams from numerous nations, including Pakistan, have gathered in Turin to take part in the opening ceremony. The Pakistani delegation will showcase their rich cultural heritage by donning traditional attire during the event.
Upon their arrival at Milan Airport, the Pakistani team received a warm welcome from Special Olympics Italy officials. The global event, scheduled from March 8 to March 15, will see participation from more than 1,500 athletes representing over 93 countries, supported by 2,000 volunteers.
Pakistan’s delegation comprises 25 members, including 10 athletes (5 men and 5 women), coaches, officials, medical personnel, and youth leaders. The athletes will compete in Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing. Furthermore, six female delegates will represent Pakistan at the Global Youth Leadership Summit (GYLS).
Muhammad Afaq Khan, a Pakistani athlete, shared his enthusiasm upon arriving in Italy, stating, “It’s a tremendous honor to represent Pakistan on such a prestigious international platform.” Another athlete, Muhammad Moazzam Iqbal, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “We are here with a winning mindset for our country.” Special athlete Tabassum Ahmed also expressed his determination, affirming that he is “fully prepared and motivated to make the nation proud.”
Coaches Erum Majeed and Muhammad Irfan highlighted the significance of participating in such a high-profile event, noting that it would greatly enhance the athletes’ skills and experience. They commended the Pakistani team for their hard work, talent, and commitment, emphasizing the intensive training they underwent in preparation for the Winter Games.
Farukhanda Jabeen, the Head of Delegation, mentioned that the Pakistani athletes have dedicated significant time and effort to prepare for the World Winter Games. Ronak Lakhani, Chairperson of Special Olympics Pakistan, expressed her confidence in the team, stating that the athletes are determined to deliver their best performance and aim for a podium finish.
She also reiterated the organization’s mission to foster an inclusive society where individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities are provided equal opportunities to thrive in sports and beyond.
