Jodi Vance, a 20-year-old bodybuilder and coach, tragically passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack, with severe dehydration cited as a contributing factor.
Vance was in Ohio participating in the Arnold Sports Festival when she began feeling unwell and was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.
Her family shared the heartbreaking news on social media, explaining that despite medical intervention, doctors were unable to save her. They described her death as “sudden and unexpected” and encouraged others to prioritize their well-being. “If anyone takes anything from this, please put your health first,” they wrote.
Vance’s coach, Justin Mihaly, disclosed that she had been using two “extremely dangerous” substances to enhance her physique without his or her family’s knowledge. “Recently, her health had become quite concerning, and now we know why,” Mihaly stated in an Instagram video.
He added that several people had urged her to slow down, but her unwavering determination made it challenging to intervene.
Mihaly also highlighted the risks associated with diuretics—medications that promote fluid loss and reduce water retention—expressing his belief that bodybuilding would benefit from eliminating their use.
Diuretics, often prescribed for conditions like high blood pressure and heart failure, can cause severe dehydration when misused, placing immense stress on the heart. Experts note that dehydration decreases blood volume, forcing the heart to work harder to circulate oxygen, which raises the risk of cardiac failure, particularly in athletes undergoing intense physical strain.
Vance’s death has added to growing concerns about sudden cardiac deaths among young athletes. Eminent Nutrition, the fitness supplement company she represented, paid tribute to her as “an incredible, unique, and beautiful soul” and celebrated her dedication to helping others.
