US Rights Group Challenges Migrant Transfers to Guantanamo Bay

WASHINGTON: A prominent U.S. civil rights organization has filed a lawsuit to prevent the possible transfer of 10 migrants to the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) took legal action in a Washington, D.C. federal court, arguing that such a move would violate immigration laws and serve no legitimate purpose beyond instilling fear.

The lawsuit highlights the harsh conditions faced by migrants detained at the facility, including reports of suicide attempts. The individuals involved—originating from Venezuela, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan—have final deportation orders but are not classified as gang members or high-risk criminals. Currently, they are being held in detention centers across Texas, Arizona, and Virginia.

The legal challenge comes amid former President Donald Trump’s pledge to escalate deportations of undocumented immigrants. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, dismissed the ACLU’s lawsuit as “baseless” and affirmed the department’s commitment to collaborating with the Justice Department to contest the case.
